Whether you’re an athlete looking to build lean muscle mass and enhance your recovery or if you’re a busy woman in need of a nutritious meal on the go, protein shakes are one of the simplest ways to make sure you get your fill of protein every day.
But while they’re a portable and efficient way to deliver protein to your body, they can get dull pretty fast. So today, we’re going to look at four simple ways to spice up your protein shakes. Your taste buds will definitely be pleased so let’s get started!
There’s nothing wrong with just using water for your protein smoothies but they don’t add any flavor at all. To change up the taste of your protein powder, try mixing up the liquid you use. You can use tea, coffee dairy milk, plant milk, fruit or vegetable juices, and even coconut water.
Just make sure that the liquid you use goes well with the existing flavor your protein powder has. Also, be aware that some liquids can add more calories to your protein shake because of their sugar and/or fat content.
Flavorful fruits like bananas and berries and even greens like spinach add a boost of flavor to your protein shake. Moreover, this is great way to add vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients into your smoothies that help boost your immunity.
Depending on the vegetables you add, you can turn your protein shake into a complete meal replacer too.
Healthy fats like nut butters is also an excellent way to boost the flavor of your protein shakes. You can also add in a couple of tablespoons of chia seeds or hemp seeds. These add a nutty flavor to an otherwise bland smoothie.
Sometimes, protein powders can be a little difficult to blend even with the best shaker cup. Adding some fat like yogurt, coconut oil, MCT oil, or even an avocado can help with texture while also adding flavor.
If you’re not one to purchase unique flavors of protein powder like red velvet cake or peanut butter and jelly then this tip is for you. Even if you stick to classic flavors like vanilla or chocolate, you can still make your protein shake s little more flavorful by adding flavor boosters.
Spices like nutmeg and cinnamon and even cocoa powder are awesome add-ins that can improve the taste of your smoothies. Flavor extracts like peppermint, banana, strawberry, and cherry can also improve the taste of your protein smoothie.
